Welcome to the Social Capital Club

Two giraffes standing in an office corridor on either side of a water cooler, with people working at desks in the background.

A safe and hosted social space for ordinary conversation, and for being human together!

The Social Capital Club exists as a replacement for the everyday social conversations many disabled people miss out on, those water-cooler chats, pub conversations, and informal moments where relationships are built simply by spending time together.

Workplaces and community groups offer these experiences, those everyday interactions are where trust, familiarity, and belonging can form. Due to access barriers, energy limits, remote working, or the pressure to perform or explain disabled people can feel like they cannot participate or to the same depth. Social Capital Club acknowledges that reality and creates a space for social connection without expectation.

Why this matters

Disabled people are disproportionately excluded from informal social spaces where relationships quietly form. Social Capital Club recognises that social connection is not a luxury, it is part of how people sustain themselves, feel seen, and participate in society.

By keeping this space light, free, and intentionally non-productive, Social Capital Club removes barriers to participation and creates room for belonging without performance.

Conversations can be about anything, the kind you might have with people at work, at a party, at a family gather. Things like pop culture; what you’ve been watching (no spoilers, just passion). A love of gaming (traditional or electronic). Sport you play or sport you love to watch (go team!) Current affairs, news, or research (let’s keep it kind though please!) Holidays you’ve taken or hope to take (ready to go!) Family life, friendship, pets (those closest to our hearts). Any shared interests and passing curiosities can be shared and developed.

If connections form, they do so naturally and can then be transferred privately. The Social Capital Club is not here to create outcomes to be managed, just facilitate the opportunities for more human connection.

Social Capital Club is designed to stay human, flexible, and sustainable.

Sessions are held monthly and alternate between a daytime and evening time-slot to recognise different energy patterns, care responsibilities, and of course access needs. There is no ongoing online community and no pressure to attend regularly. You come when it suits you.

Monthly hosted sessions:

  • Free to attend

  • Not an online community you have to keep up with.

  • People can join in, listen quietly, break off into special interest rooms.

  • If connections form, they do so naturally and privately, not as outcomes to be managed.
